1280-1740

Early history

In 1280, the tranquil grounds of Ballinderry Park first echoed with the prayers of Franciscan friars from Kilconnell Friary. For centuries, this land remained a place of contemplation until the winds of change swept through Ireland in the late 17th century. The Diocese of Clonfert became the new steward, soon entrusting the property to Henry Stafford, who in turn welcomed Lawrence Ward, a son of local soil, as its tenant.

1740-1871

The Comyn family

Fate and family ties brought Ballinderry Park into the capable hands of Nicholas Comyn, ushering in an era of growth and tradition. For over a hundred years, the Comyn clan tended the land, their days filled with the thundering of hooves and the excitement of the hunt. In 1871, as Ireland underwent significant changes, the Comyns seized the opportunity to purchase the freehold, cementing their bond with Ballinderry Park.

1871-1917

The Daniel O'Connell connection

The pages of Ballinderry's history took an intriguing turn when Andrew Comyn married Mary, granddaughter of the renowned Daniel O'Connell, "The Liberator." This union brought a hint of revolutionary fervor to the estate, culminating in Andrew Nugent Comyn's appointment as High Sheriff of County Galway in 1917.

1917-2000

A period of change

As the 20th century unfolded, Ballinderry Park weathered the storms of Irish independence and social transformation. The Comyn family continued their stewardship until 1945, when they departed, leaving the house to face an uncertain future. For decades, the once-grand estate stood silent, its rooms empty, its gardens overgrown.

2000-2024

Restoration and renewal

In 2000, George and Susie Gossip breathed new life into Ballinderry Park. Their careful restoration blended 18th-century charm with personal touches, including treasures from Susie's ancestral Dillon family. The grounds flourished once more, graced by specimen trees including a rare London plane.

2024-Present

A new chapter

In 2024, Rowan and Laoise purchased the property with a vision to breathe new life into Ballinderry Park as an exclusive venue for weddings, corporate events, and unforgettable stays. Today, Ballinderry Park stands ready to welcome a new generation, offering its timeless beauty and rich heritage for celebrations that will echo through the ages.

Ballinderry Park est un petit manoir géorgien datant d'environ 1740, situé dans la plaine de l'est du comté de Galway, dans l'ouest de l'Irlande, près du village de Kilconnell. Le nom Ballinderry vient de l’irlandais et signifie « le domaine des chênes ». Les terres appartenaient à l’origine au couvent franciscain de Kilconnell, fondé en 1280.[1]

Après la dissolution du couvent, la propriété passa à la fin du XVIIe siècle au diocèse de Clonfert, qui la loua à Henry Stafford. Celui-ci sous-loua la maison à Lawrence Ward, membre d'une famille locale établie de longue date. Le bail de Ward passa, par sa sœur, à son neveu Nicholas Comyn, et la famille Comyn exploita le domaine pendant plus d'un siècle, avec une passion bien connue pour les chevaux et la chasse.[1]

La Landed Estates Database de l'Université de Galway mentionne Ballinderry comme résidence de J. Comyn en 1837 ; à l'époque du cadastre de Griffith, la propriété était louée par Andrew Comyn aux Ecclesiastical Commissioners et évaluée à 16 £ ; elle fut la résidence du colonel John Comyn en 1894 et la propriété d'Andrew N. Comyn en 1906. Les Comyn en achetèrent la pleine propriété en 1871, après la séparation de l'Église d'Irlande et de l'État.[2] Andrew Comyn épousa Mary, petite-fille de Daniel O’Connell, « le Libérateur ». La famille resta à Ballinderry Park jusqu’en 1945.[6]

Après plusieurs décennies d'abandon, la maison fut achetée en 2000 par George et Susie Gossip, qui entreprirent une restauration minutieuse : les modifications victoriennes de la façade furent effacées et les pièces principales lambrissées dans le style du début du XVIIIe siècle. Une grande partie des boiseries et du décor intérieur provient de la famille Dillon de Clonbrock, tout près d'ici, dont Susie Gossip est une descendante. En 2005, la restauration était suffisamment avancée pour que la famille puisse s'y installer.[4][5]

En 2024, la maison a été acquise par Rowan et Laoise, qui l'exploitent aujourd'hui comme domaine privatisable pour les séjours et les réceptions, tout en continuant à entretenir le bâti et le parc. Le parc abrite des arbres remarquables, dont un grand platane, rare dans les parcs irlandais. Ballinderry Park figure au National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, l'inventaire du patrimoine architectural irlandais.[3]
